Building Custom Authentication in ASP.NET Core - Hands-On with RemoteAuthenticationHandler
October 16, 2025

Overview:
Want to go beyond the built-in authentication handlers in ASP.NET? In this session, Robert Folkesson and Elin Fokine from Active Solution will break down what a RemoteAuthenticationHandler is: the moving parts, how it extends the ASP.NET authentication pipeline, and why you might build one yourself. They'll then demonstrate how they've used this approach in Active Login, their open-source project for integrating Swedish BankID. Finally, we'll plug it into Duende IdentityServer to illustrate how custom handlers can enable flexible identity federation scenarios.
What you'll learn:
This presentation and demonstration will provide a comprehensive look at how to extend ASP.NET's authentication pipeline for specialized use cases. You'll leave with a clear mental model of how RemoteAuthenticationHandler works — and patterns you can reuse to build your own custom authentication flows.
